- Only grow on enriched media
Haemophilus influenzae
About
- Grows on chocolate agar (heat treated blood)
- Non capsulated form is a normal commensal in the respiratory tract.
- Capsulated (type b) only in a few, carriers within the population.
Disease
- Epiglottits
- Meningitis in the under 5s
- make chronic lung conditions worse.
Treatment'
- Often resistant to penicillins
- Cefotaxime or ceftriaxone.
- Hib vaccine has cause reductions.
Legionella pneumophila
About
- Cause of legionaire's disease, named due to the first outbreak in a Legion Conference.
- Gram negative
- Obligate aerobe
- Fastidious growth requirements
Disease
- Pneumonia
- Fever with no respiratory symptoms
- Bodywide spread
Treatment
- Erythromicin, with rifamricin in bad cases.
- Tetracycline and fluoroquinolones also work.
Brucella
- Types like B. abortus, B. canis, etc
- Get it from animals
- Causes fever and systemic upset
- Avoid milk and animals products
- 6 weeks with a tetracycline and an aminoglycoside
Bordetella
- Common one is B. pertussis
- Causes whooping cough
- Mainly affects young children
- Treat with erythromycin
