  • Only grow on enriched media

Haemophilus influenzae

About

  • Grows on chocolate agar (heat treated blood)
  • Non capsulated form is a normal commensal in the respiratory tract.
  • Capsulated (type b) only in a few, carriers within the population.

Disease

  • Epiglottits
  • Meningitis in the under 5s
  • make chronic lung conditions worse.

Treatment'

  • Often resistant to penicillins
  • Cefotaxime or ceftriaxone.
  • Hib vaccine has cause reductions.

Legionella pneumophila

About

  • Cause of legionaire's disease, named due to the first outbreak in a Legion Conference.
  • Gram negative
  • Obligate aerobe
  • Fastidious growth requirements

Disease

  • Pneumonia
  • Fever with no respiratory symptoms
  • Bodywide spread

Treatment

  • Erythromicin, with rifamricin in bad cases.
  • Tetracycline and fluoroquinolones also work.

Brucella

  • Types like B. abortus, B. canis, etc
  • Get it from animals
  • Causes fever and systemic upset
  • Avoid milk and animals products
  • 6 weeks with a tetracycline and an aminoglycoside

Bordetella

  • Common one is B. pertussis
  • Causes whooping cough
  • Mainly affects young children
  • Treat with erythromycin
